Wednesday Nite Singapore Jukebox

Another night, another hotel, but at least I have internet. So I have decided that for a while I will subject you all to some smoooooth music from DJ Joni. OK OK, maybe a little too much port has been consumed. If you don’t want to listen – just skip over!

  1. Tonight’s theme is Toronto – the city where i lived in the mid-nineties. Maybe a little to country for some.

The first song is by the Cowboy Junkies – I lived just behind the church where the Trinity Sessions were recorded, and saw them live a few times along Queen St W. For me the touch point in this song is the thought of the sound of the streetcars, the sound TTC’s in TO.

  2. Next is the immense Tragically Hip (like most of us here). Again – i used to see them on Queen W in the 90’s – now they are a major act in Canada. OK – maybe that is not that great but they deserve to be bigger.

  3. Next we have the Lowest of the Low. No – not George Bush Sr, the band. I used to see them at Sneaky Dees up on Bloor. Sweaty horrid venue… but great music.

    Audio only 😦

  4. Now we switch to the west coast to BC – where the trio Grapes of Wrath had a CD that was on high rotation when I was living in Portugal – something about the sun setting over the ocean or something

  5. And finally – another audio only. Please give this song a listen. I truly love this song. The band is Blue Rodeo – who I have seen in TO, London, Sydney and Amsterdam… one of my all time favourite bands.

it is followed by – what I think – is one of the great closings to any CD, sublime piano at the end is ruined in this clip:

But the lyrics hit me everytime:

Tell me the things that you hide away
    Your pain
    Your pleasure
    Your sorrow

    (joni – sleep!)

  6. You can tell when someone’s on holiday in Singapore because staying in your hotel room and posting youtube songs is about as exciting as it gets..

Unless you’re prepared to “live on the edge” and walk around the streets shouting “I’m chewing gum and I don’t care!”

I was just thinking the same…oh joni’s lonely (sniff) Pretty boring music, that can’t be helping the situation!

  8. Kamahl? why are people so unkind?

  9. Music Break.

  10. I see your Metalica and raise you a Slayer.

  11. Slayer..I remember them, mostly courtesy of son who engraved the name into his bedside table and colored it in with texta.
