Comments

I have just activated a new function in wordpress where the comments will be limited to 20 per page. This should speed up some of the issues that people have been having with the comments causing the pages to be really big. WordPress will now split the comments onto different pages (defaulting to the last page).

If you have a look at the Frolyxs thread, you will see that we have an “older comments” option at the bottom, and whe you click on that it goes to the previous page of comments, and then you have a “newer comments” option too! Magic eh?

Anyway – let me know if it is working OK and if you like it.

Oh – and I have not turned on the “emedding comments” option as I dislike it.

  1. I’m not so sure about this newer comments/older comments thing…

I kinda liked it when I could just scroll through everyone’s nonsense in order to arrive at my own lucid, intelligent observations.

Can we make it 30 or 40? 20 just seems a little too short (I used to think this at Blogocracy as well).
What was the ’embedding comments function; was that similar to the ‘reply’ function that Botl and Ackerman use? If so, I agree – leave it out.

  3. and by reb, I of course mean joni ๐Ÿ˜ณ

  4. What do we think? 30? 40?

  5. Do I hear 50?

  6. What about an option to view all posts at once, for those who prefer it that way?

  7. Do I hear 50?

slow down reb, ,gotta be careful about inflation and there is a recession on ya know ๐Ÿ˜‰

  8. Caney

It’s an either or option from what I can see.

How about 42? It is, after all, the ultimate answer.

  9. joni

    LOL – I vote for 42!

  10. Right – it is now set at 42.

I am off for most of the afternoon to construct the AI MG float… have fun everyone.

  11. forty F***kn two – what are ya?

seriously, I reckon 30 is a better figure (or 32 if you prefer) – reduces the dreaded “clicks”…

…sreb! Put that bloody bottle away! I said “click” not “clink”!

  12. Like reb, I don’t like it, makes it way too complicated and you lose track, it’s easier just to scroll through from start to finish.

I don’t know what was so hard about scrolling for ‘some’ (how many) people, you’ve gone from and easy system to a harder one and you also lose the continuation of the comments – DON’T LIKE IT PUT IT BACK.

  13. And unless each f@#$ing comment is numbered you get lost in this f@%ing maze of comment pages, previous and newer, not f@#$ing knowing whether you are at the f@#$ing beginning, in the f@#$ing middle or near the f@#$ing end! ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. What kittylitter said on both occasions. The KISS principle!

  15. I get the impression that Kitty doesn’t like it. I agree..a numbering system as it’s too easy to get lost.

  16. There is always the date/ time stamps to orientate yourself …

  17. Iโ€™m not so sure about this newer comments/older comments thingโ€ฆ

I kinda liked it when I could just scroll through everyoneโ€™s nonsense in order to arrive at my own lucid, intelligent observations.

Lol I concur, not yours reb, mine.

  18. So you have to look for the date/time someone first started commenting against what date/time the author posted a comment as you click through the pages, each click and date/time scrawl gets you closer to your goal of finding the beginning.

By that time, I don’t even care what they are on about, I’ve lost interest in the whole thread.

    Simpler? Easier?

  19. My mama told me I lookd smart when I had my picture taken by da Polease

sorry, I was just being pedantic, I do like the ability to read the lot from start to finish but once it gets over about 50 or 100 it’s better to jump to the section you want rather than scrolling. That said, having page numbers to choose from as opposed to older/ newer is much better.

Splitting threads into 40 or 50 posts/ page is better for mobile and slow connections as well.

  21. I’m easy. Perhaps the page number thing like Dave55 said.

Tho kittylitter can be very convincing w/ her f@#$ings.

    Being pedantic back dave…

I don’t think so, I prefer to scroll and have it all on the one page, it’s all a natural follow on. How do you even know what you want amongst the newer/older pages or where it is?

How many people would that affect?

Hehe, just lettin’ you all know how passionate I am in my dislike.

  23. If you must make pages of comments, then you really have to make it easy to view. You need to give people the option of choosing oldest or newest to display first and then number the pages for continuity (see below).

    Show Oldest | Newest first Page 3 of 3 ยซ FirstP < 1 2 3

    Can it be done joni?

IMO, If wordpress doesn’t allow this you should go back to the original or use another template.

  24. kittylitter has a good point. But I still like 42 posts to a page ๐Ÿ˜‰

  25. joni, its easy…go back to a single page and just control the length of JMc’s (and Dave55 now!) posts… ๐Ÿ˜‰

  26. oh Thank you Joni, ๐Ÿ™‚

  27. TB,

    Hear hear!

I prefer the old way with just a single page.

It helps to re-read most of the posts for a second or third time seeing as most of them don’t make any sense.

  28. Just back in from a day out… so – do we keep comments by pages or just have a single page and scroll to the bottom?

And on the numbering, it is down to the template we use. I will see what I can do.

  29. Having a page of the newest comments makes it easier to download onto my mobile.

  30. do we keep comments by pages or just have a single page and scroll to the bottom?

I don’t like the older/newer comments thing, prefer to scroll. I don’t know what the general consensus is though, how the numbers stack up.

Who wants to keep the one page scroll through?

  31. I’d like to keep the one page scroll thing.

You are refering to your posts I take it?

    One page, joni, ’tis easier.

  33. OK – back to one page it is then.

  34. TB,

    Ouch! I felt that….!

    LOL! Taken me a while!

  36. “OK – back to one page it is then.”

    Democracy in action.

    i’m easy regarding this decision.
