Bush’s mate Howard back in Washington

A cross post with Voices without Votes:

The upcoming inauguration has taken an Aussie turn. Barack Obama’s displacement from Blair House was caused by former Australian Prime Minister John Howard who is to receive the US Medal of Freedom from his mate George W. Bush.

U.S. bloggers were outraged apparently. Australian bloggers were just as vocal.

For more.

  1. The truth is the Rodent is a Refugee – off to the US to seek ‘political asylum’,

    Clearly a queue jumper.

  2. I can thiink of a place where he can pin his medal.

  3. “Clearly a queue jumper.”

No such thing here in the good old US of A….Didn’t you know?

  4. “No such thing here in the good old US of A….Didn’t you know?”

Actually, there is no such thing here in Australia as well. But it was the ‘dog whistle’ used here in Australia by Howard, Downer et al.

If you were fleeing Afghanistan or Iraq, the idea that you should queue was laughable. A death wish!

  5. “If you were fleeing Afghanistan or Iraq, the idea that you should queue was laughable. A death wish!”

You know, I have often wondered about that? I was always under that impression that those seeking to escape such a scenario would seek asylum in the first country without such conditions. Oddly however “refugees” are now allowed to “shop” for the best country before making their claim? I don’t know, just seems the whole thing has become another program the rest of the world has learned to exploit, meanwhile those in real need/nowhere to flee, are at pains to get the same kind of help; like having to sneak into the undercarriage of a jetliner. I don’t know, I think I would take my chances with “Christmas Island”.

    http://www.gambianow.com/news/News/Another_emigrant_dies_on_airplane_leaving_Banjul.html

  6. The rodent gang wanted to deny refuge to fleeing Iraqis. Then justified the invasion of Iraq as “removing a murderous dictator”.

So, it he was a murderous dictator (and that is obvious, though that wasn’t the original justification for the invasion), why not afford his victims refuge?

  7. I’m surprised he’s not sleeping in the same bed as the idiot Bush, they seem to be inseperatable. Here he is the ex fool that buggared the economy, to George he’s one of the blind mice that followed the Empror through all his blunders. But the yanks would only be able to recognise him from the shoe laces hanging out of George Dubbya’s backside.

  8. What a joke. Howard gets priority over Obama. How absurd! George W Bush is determined to make himself a laughing stock right up until his final days as President of the United States.

  9. dave@7

Sleeping in the same bed , eeewwww thats a terrible image. Glad I didn’t have breakfast this morning.

  10. Sparta,

What’s your view on the Howard/Obama thing? Is this getting much coverage over there?

My personal view is that Howard should have offered to go to a hotel as soon as he realised there was a problem -that he hasn’t (or at least not that I’m aware of) just reinforces my view that Howard is an arrogant little shit and that all his comments about accepting it on behalf of Australia generally are a load of sh1t (which, to be honest, I thought they were anyway but at least he said it I guess).

  11. Shane@2..they wouldn’t be able to pin it over his heart as they wouldn’t be able to find one.

Also Shane, there is an excellent Nicholson cartoon over at the Oz showing this exact same thing. http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/opinion/ Warning: Adult content.

  12. Tellingly both Blair and Uribe declined to stay at Blair House with Blair opting for the British Embassy.

Obama has a reason, that is so that his young daughters wouldn’t have to stay in a hotel.

I love this photo of Howard, says it all (pardon the expression) but it says to me Smug Pr*ck. http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/us-blogs-bitter-about-howards-blair-house-bump/1402480.aspx

  13. Excellent photo Min. This epotimises his service or lack of it to the Australian public, as one of the most heartless and self centred pricks this country has ever known.

  14. Headline should be

    “HOWARD THROWS CHILDREN OVERBOARD”

Let’s not forget how Howard ‘interferred’ in US domestic politics. Certainly Obama won’t.

    LOL

There have been some excellent one liners by the blogocrats today. It makes it hard to get work done.

Still laughing at OB’s Janet comment on the friday thread.

  16. N5 @ 14

    Excellent!

  17. Thank you for the memory Nature 5. When the majority..well understatement, let’s just say All Of the Australian mainstream press were busy sucking up to Howard that Obama came forward to tell JWH to stick it up his derrier.

As Obama wisely noted (via Nature’s link) “Otherwise it’s just a bunch of empty rhetoric.”. Insightful person Obama..amazing how he managed to summarise our former PM.

  18. Breaking news:

“NO APOLOGY TO BLACKS OR BARACKS”

    Consistent!

  19. “Barack Obama’s displacement from Blair House was caused by former Australian Prime Minister John Howard
    Kevin Rennie”

Actually it was caused by George Bush who invited him to come. Planing for these events would occur months in advance. Tony Blair would traditionally stay at the British Embassy by convention. When the invitation was given it was always possible that McCain could have been the next President

As usual, all the leftoids can do is get perverted pleasure making fun of John Howard while Kevin Rudd has blown the surplus, Unemployment will be the next to increase.

Perhaps you people could find more important things to talk about.

What I find amazing is that more than 12 months after the last election you people still keep bringing him up. Get over it people he lost the election.

Like Tim Dunlop you people have no reason to exist anymore since you only get pleasure making fun of Howard.

People please find another reason to exist.

  20. The rodent has come in for a fair bit of stick on the New York Times blog, Caucus. Not just from Americans, but Australians too.

    http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/01/06/blair-house-guest-unmasked/?apage=1#comments

How typical of this rat to make a disgrace of himself on the international stage where Obama is concerned. He still hasn’t apologised for dog-whistling an association of that coloured man with terrorism. The bloody shame of him.

What goes around comes around. I believe karma will catch up with this small animal and the sycophantic lickspittles that prostrated themselves at his twitching paws for so long.

    Looking forward to it actually.

  21. New headline:

    “NEIL THROWS PERVERTS OVERBOARD”.

  22. I love your always sidesplitting cameo interjections on threads smearing the already seweragelike name of John Howard Neil.

Funny stuff. I think you actually believe that “lefties” are some kind of evil subhumans that gain succour by clinging to the foul acts of the Rodent like ideological limpets.

  23. Toiletboss @ 22.

I do believe we are as one. How does it feel to be on my side?

  24. “Not just from Americans, but Australians too.
    20. Caney | January 10, 2009 at 12:57 am”

You mean some Australians do not like John Howard. May enjoy telling lies about him. I don’t believe it.

Apparently the “Chief of Protocol of the United States” is responsible for who stays at Blair House. Blair House is the official guest house for state visitors.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chief_of_Protocol_of_the_United_States

Howard would have been invited months in advance. You just do not turn up at Blair House

“I think you actually believe that “lefties” are some kind of evil subhumans
    2. Toiletboss | January 10, 2009 at 1:00 am”

    This is true

  25. LOL@ Neil.

I think your chain yanking is hilarious Neil.

  26. “How does it feel to be on my side?”

In fact less separates us (age aside) than most.

But, then there is that other thing…or should I say, that team of “things”.

  27. Howard is an embarrassment to our nation once again.

White House Asked Howard To Stay In Blair House To Give ‘Some Plausible Reason’ For Refusing Obama:

Last night on MSNBC’s “Countdown,” Bloomberg journalist Margaret Carlson revealed that when the White House turned down Obama’s request in early December, it had not yet even invited Howard to stay at the Blair House:

I reported…on December 11 and 12 that there were no foreign dignitaries booked into Blair House during that period of time. … I have the feeling they asked him [Howard] to come and stay so that there might be some plausible reason for not letting the Obamas stay there.

She also pointed out that Blair House has “119 rooms with 35 bathrooms. Howard wouldn’t even have to share a sink with the Obamas.”

That the White House choose to prioritize the former prime minister of Australia over the incoming President of the United States emphasizes Bush’s sense of loyalty. Howard, a darling of the right wing, was one of Bush’s biggest cheerleaders whom Bush has called his “mate of steel” for standing with him on Iraq and being the only leader of an industrialized nation — besides Bush, of course — to refuse to sign the Kyoto Protocol.

Still, supplanting the incoming President with Howard seems like a final, petty kick in the teeth from Bush.

…and Howard, he doesn’t mind being petty and spiteful either. Why not just stay at a hotel – he’s only there for one night!

  28. Neil of S. Settle down ol’ chap. Rodent is about as relevant as is your undying support for (him).
The Bennelong electors have spoken, thankfully, loud and clear.

For the record, I dislike the person, JWH, immensely, and hold him beneath contempt, at about the same depth as whale s**t.

  29. “Barack Obama’s displacement from Blair House was caused by former Australian Prime Minister John Howard
    Kevin Rennie”

Like I said it was caused by George Bush who invited him to come.

” I have the feeling they asked him [Howard] to come and stay so that there might be some plausible reason for not letting the Obamas stay there.”

Feelings, nothing more than feelings etc etc

  30. Toiletboss @ 26.

I was only teasing TB. I know we’re good mates.

  31. Yoo hoo Neil. Howard could have done the right thing and knocked back the invitation. Blair did and so did the other recipient of the You Beaut American Hero Medal.

  32. Blair did and so did the other recipient of the You Beaut American Hero Medal.
    31. Min… | January 10, 2009 at 1:35 pm

British people traditionally stay at the British Embassy. I am not sure what protocol is for Australians. If I received an invitation from Bush i would not know all the protocol requirements.

If this has caused problems it is Bush’s fault.

The conspiracy theory launched by Kittypoo is that Bush did this as a kick in the teeth for Obama.

  33. min@31

Is that so? I didn’t know that.

Further reinforces the mendacious self importance of the little grub in my eyes; nothing he likes better than to be glorified by his heroes of the US lunatic right. Displacing Obama is just an added bonus for the scum.

  34. Hello ToiletB..it’s at: http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/us-blogs-bitter-about-howards-blair-house-bump/1402480.aspx

“The British broadsheet The Times reported that Britain’s former prime minister Tony Blair, who is also to receive the Presidential Medal, declined an invitation to stay at Blair House because he didn’t wish to be “the man who bumped Obama”.

Therefore it is likely that it’s nothing to do with British traditionally staying at the British Embassy..and likewise don’t Australians traditionally stay at the Australian Embassy?

Obviously JWH was not fussed that he was the man ‘who bumped Obama’.

  35. “Obviously JWH was not fussed that he was the man ‘who bumped Obama’.”min

I reckon that he’d wear such a tag with the same reverence that he will afford to the accolade he is about to receive from the US’s currently heavily soiled, outgoing president. One last love in. Likeminded discredited ideologues fondling eachothers egos.

  36. As Downer can attest, diplomacy was never one of Howard’s fortes and so it doesn’t surprise me that JWH has ousted incoming President Obama, wife and the kids just so that he can have his final fling.

It’s not surprising that people in the know such as KittyL are considering some sort of conspiracy as WHY would Bush even make the offer of Blair House (to Blair, Howard and others yet unknown) knowing that the Inauguration is only 10 days away.

  37. “Obviously JWH was not fussed that he was the man ‘who bumped Obama’.
    34. Min… | January 10, 2009 at 2:04 pm”

I reackon Howard didn’t even know that this would cause a kerfuffle. If you receive an invitation from the President it is his job not to have his guests to cause trouble. How many Australians would know that the President-elect moves in on January 15 and that this time he wanted to move in earlier.

And what about the other recipient. I rather doubt he knew that Obama wanted to move in early. Most probably had other reasons for not wanting to stay at Blair house.

And as if you people really care about protocol. Didn’t our current PM blab about some conversation he had with Bush. Trying to bignote himself about how important he was. I don’t recall you people criticising this.

Stuff happens and you people have nothing better to do other than to make a mountain out of a molehill.

“and likewise don’t Australians traditionally stay at the Australian Embassy?”

I don’t know. Perhaps you could tell me. But if I received an invitation from the US President to stay at Blair house I would accept it. I would also be upset if this caused trouble since it is the Presidents staff job to make sure invited guests do not upset the applecart.

  38. Matters little Neil because most of the world now believes Howard took the accommodation to kick Obama in the teeth at the behest of the worst president America has had.

This premise is reinforced by Howard’s ill formed words against Obama in 2008, which are still remembered and are being coughed up again.

Whether Howard innocently took the accommodation because his bestest ever buddy mate and hero asked him to stay there is mute, history will record that on that day Howard, an Australian Prime Minister who had previously denigrated Obama, forced Obama to seek alternate accommodation against the tradition of an incoming president staying at Blair House.

Just another black mark in a long list of growing black marks against Howard, and which will nowhere be the last black mark against him.

  39. LOL Tony Neil – now you are trying to explain this away as a “mountain out of a molehill”… hehe.

And this is standard Howard MO, his old faithful “I wasn’t told”.

  40. Ummm, joni…it was Neil. Tony ain’t here.

Gotta go to work now. Seeyaz.

  41. EEK!!!!

    Sorry Tony….

  42. 41. Heyyy, what the… 😉

  43. And Adrian, that’s it in a nutshell.

Howard denegrated Obama to help out a mate – the incoming President traditionally stays at Blair House (and if Howard didn’t know this then Howard must have been playing ostrich during his 11 years as PM) – Howard chose to stay at Blair House whereas Blair et al chose to reside either at their embassies or at a hotel.

Of course Bush should not have made the offer, but neither should Howard have accepted.

Ah well only another 10 days and the whole wretched crew will be gone.

  44. rodent should be asked to pay for Mr Obama’s hotel suite from his own pocket. That’d make him sit up and take notice.

  45. Off topic. Just wondering where Weekend Wonderland has gone to…it’s 3.15pm. Are we being expected to work overtime???

  46. Thank you Adrian, I didn’t realize that it was a ‘meld’.

  47. Adrian (and hellip) and 38: I think that pretty well sums it up Adrian.

IMO Neil is the sort of bloke that can’t put himself into somebody else’s shoes and look at issues from a different perspective.

Howard did or said such and such and it upset people. Those people lodge their disapproval and Neil comes down that we must move on because the bloke was kicked out of office 13 months ago.

I don’t care if it’s Howard, Ben Hur, Kate Bush, Roger Whiitaker or Dick Turpin: if a person does or says something in public that is not approved of by the public then the public has a right to voice their protest, especially in an open forum like this.

  48. “Howard, an Australian Prime Minister who had previously denigrated Obama, forced Obama to seek alternate accommodation against the tradition of an incoming president staying at Blair House.
    38. Adrian of Nowra… | January 10, 2009 at 2:39 pm”

I don’t think this is correct. It is tradition for the President-elect to move in on January 15. Obama was asking to move in earlier against tradition. I am not up on protocol but some of these protocol people are crazy.

Furthermore as this has cause trouble I would blame Bush. Australians would not know about US protocol. And I doubt that Howard knew that Obama had made the request. How would Howard know that Obama wanted to move in early????

Stuff happens in life and evil people will spin it however they want to.

  49. Neil @37. Just a quick’un as hubby is working only a 3/4 day today. Re..”I reackon Howard didn’t even know that this would cause a kerfuffle”. I think that if Howard didn’t know, then he should have or that Howard’s very well paid staff were seriously amiss. The Obama girls started school on the 6th and so where were the family to stay if not the traditional lodging of Blair House? They were shifted off to a hotel (a nice one to be sure but still it’s just a hotel).

Obama didn’t want to move in early. It’s a tradition that the incoming First Family reside at Blair House prior to the Inauguration.

This is a serious snub to the incoming First Family.

  50. As I stated Neil the point you are attempting to make is completely mute, and whether Howard was innocent in this doesn’t matter as the world now sees Howard as the uppity ex-Australian PM, and good unswerving mate of the worst president they had seen, kicking out a president elect, who as a presidential candidate the uppity ex-PM had denigrated in the past when PM of Australia.

History and the archives will put this down as a black mark against Howard and Bush, whether it was really only Bush’s dirty work.

  51. Neil, as previous the girls had to start school on the 5th/6th. http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5g7MVgFxvtwtkAoROPeyRVTPz_nWA

But surely this is a reasonable request, to move into Blair House rather than residing in a hotel for the little girls’ first days at a new school.

Of course Howard knew, I knew, you knew..so why didn’t Howard know. It’s been in the papers for weeks re the Obama family’s move to Washington and one thing that Howard always prided himself on was reading the newspapers cover to cover.

  52. I think that if Howard didn’t know, then he should have or that Howard’s very well paid staff were seriously amiss
    50. Min… | January 10, 2009 at 3:48 pm

For once I think I have agreed with something you said (possibly).

“Obama didn’t want to move in early. It’s a tradition that the incoming First Family reside at Blair House prior to the Inauguration.”

I think this is incorrect. January 15 is the traditional moving in date. He asked to move in earlier against tradition so his children could attend school.

Neither Tony Blair nor John Howard would have known anything about this.

  53. Howard, a PM who was mostly kept in the dark on major matters of national importance by his staff according to Howard, and now an ex-PM who apparently continues to be kept in the dark. And no surprise in every case this being kept uninformed gives Howard an alibi of ignorance and a convenient blame shift.

  54. Neil. And so Howard nor any of his staff nor that of George Bush’s for that matter knew that the girls were starting school on the 6th and that Obama had requested to stay at Blair House????

Strangely, the rest of the world knew.

  55. 54. Adrian of Nowra… | January 10, 2009 at 4:09 pm

O.K. Adrian I will play devils advocate since I am not an expert on US protocol.

Some of these protocol people are crazy. What if Obama’s request was out of line. Perhaps he was trying to make trouble for Bush. i don’t think Bush or Obama like each other. Perhaps Obama new his request would create trouble. What would the Officier for Protocol at Blair House say to such a request???

Perhaps Bush was trying to make trouble for Obama by being difficult. Perhaps it was a kick in the teeth by Bush.

All life is politics and who really knows the motives of people.

Fact is January 15 which is 5 days before inauguration is the traditional moving in date.

Neither Tony Blair nor Howard would have known of Obama’s request or the politics involved.

  56. Neil..good grief. You are technically correct, the incoming President is not expected at Blair House until the 15th, however Obama requested early access so that his 2 young girls would not have to stay at an hotel while they started at a new school. Surely you would consider that this request is reasonable.

This has been in the newspapers for weeks and so if Howard didn’t know about it then he should be tearing strips off his staff. Blair knew, so why didn’t Howard?

It’s not necessarily protocol, it’s just good manners.

Did Howard (quote) ‘know of the politics involved’. Well..hard to answer this one. It’s an either or situation – either Howard after 11yrs as PM still doesn’t have a clue OR he doesn’t have a clue.

  57. “Neither Tony Blair nor John Howard would have known anything about this.”

Perhaps that’s the case, but as Adrian argues – it’s a moot point. ‘Moot’ in the sense that that the matter raised cannot have any effect on the controversy being debated.

Any experienced politician would have seen this PR disaster in an instant and changed the arrangements. Indeed they would have turned it into a positive. Made a grand gesture. But not Howard. A clear case of HUBRIS.

I for one am glad that the rest of the world now has the opportunity to see what we in Australia have known for years – the Emperor has no clothes. And it’s even more satisfying that it’s self-inflicted. Lol.

  58. Surely you would consider that this request is reasonable.
    57. Min… | January 10, 2009 at 4:38 pm

I would consider this request reasonable but some protocol people are crazy. And you never know what gets people upset. And maybe Bush was being difficult. Who knows what goes through peoples brains

“Blair knew, so why didn’t Howard?”

Did he?? Tony Blair traditionally stays at the British Embassy. You showed a link where it said that Blair did not want to upstage Obama but what did he mean by this (if he actually said it).

Tony Blair is most probably the second most famous foreign politician in the world after Bush. Could you name another world leader if asked??? Blair being at Blair House just before Obama arrives on the 15th January might be looking as if he is trying to upstage Obama. Howard is a nobody who Americans would know nothing about. Americans would know who Tony Blair was. Anyway Blair traditionally stays at the British Embassy.

Like I said, stuff happens and you can make trouble if you want to.

And who knows what the protocol actually is. if you are invited to stay at Blair House by the president and turn the invitation down would this be considered rude???

  59. Sorry you are right N5, it should have been ‘moot’ not ‘mute’.

  60. Neil: as per Howard, Blair was also asked to stay at Blair House. However realising the situation, Blair declined the invitation opting to stay at the the Embassy (not mean digs by any stretch). The link is as per stated, Blair did not want to upstage Obama.

    Howard however accepted.

You are quite right, You can make trouble if you want to. And hence the reason that the Howards should have done the right thing and given Blair House to the incoming President and his family.

Hypothetical: If I was given an invitation by an outgoing President knowing that the incoming President had requested to stay at the same residence in order that his two young girls don’t have to stay in an hotel, well then of course that I’d knock back the invitation.

  61. If I was given an invitation by an outgoing President knowing that the incoming President had requested to stay at the same residence in order that his two young girls don’t have to stay in an hotel, well then of course that I’d knock back the invitation.
    61. Min… | January 10, 2009 at 5:16 pm

Me to. However the request was made to Blair House and Bush. Howard would have been unaware of the request.

Unless you want to say that Howard is up on every request that Obama makes to Blair House and the White house. I did not know that Howard is up on the requests of Barak Obama

  62. Neil..grrr…of course Howard knew about Obama, the family moving to Washington.

For one last time, the new First Family traditionally moves into Blair House prior to the inauguration. As you state around the 15th.

This time, the incoming President requested early access due to having two young daughters starting school.

Blair had manners, and opted to stay elsewhere. Howard doesn’t have good manners.

By gee you’re a frustrating person Neil. Like a dog with a bone. I really do have to choof for the moment as I have promised hubby pepper steak for dinner. Hugs, Min.

  63. “Howard is a nobody”

    Not quite. But close. Lol.

    But how to convince him.

  64. This time, the incoming President requested early access due to having two young daughters starting school.
    63. Min… | January 10, 2009 at 5:32 pm

This is correct. However George Bush turned him down.

Perhaps you should ask george Bush why he did this.

  65. “Perhaps you should ask george Bush why he did this.”

You mean ask the most unpopular US President ever, why he made a decision to become even more unpopular?

be thankful that it’s the end of both an ‘era’ and a huge ‘error’.

  66. “You mean ask the most unpopular US President ever, why he made a decision to become even more unpopular?

Neil, as far as the tubes are concerned, you are an intellectual joke. An ongoing parody. A cheap shot, Someone to be pitied rather than condemned.

And to-night, I am being uncharacteristically gentle. Lol.

  69. Howard only grew his eye-brows so he caould be part of the bush family.

  70. Few days ago Bush entered the Hospital complaining of Piles.

    I just heard,
Howard was not harmed while he was gently removed.

  71. “leftoid perverts”…Bwahahahahaha.

Neil displays a broadness of understanding rarely witnessed.

  72. “Howard was not harmed while he was gently removed.”

Yeah but I bet it harmed GW’s insides. I can’t imagine the Rodent (a gerbil in this case perhaps?) not digging in his teeth & claws in an effort to stay embedded in his most coveted of dwellings.

  73. You’re on fire today aquanut.

Let me guess. Seawater on the rocks.

  74. Hello Miglo..check your email, I have written.

Neil..leftoid pervert? That’s wonderful! Mostly no one is game enough to call me names. I am very much enjoying your imputs. But name calling…will have to come over and wash your mouth out with soap and water.

John Howard tells Barnaby Joyce to move to the House of Representatives

    From LP, highlight mine

Maybe it’s still the silly season in Australian politics. Or maybe any development involving both John Howard and the Queensland Nationals is by definition surreal. Barnaby Joyce has apparently been chatting to John Howard, and has indicated a willingness to stand for a lower house seat in order to take over the Nats’ federal leadership. It’s tempting to suggest that Howard’s just playing spoiler in the Coalition pack, but the key is probably the notion that Joyce could win back “Howard’s battlers”. Either way, it’s about Howard’s legacy, or in other words, his ego – and Joyce’s.

Well Neil we would love to stop bringing up Howard but Howard refuses to go away, now he is in the background manipulating the opposition. As long as Howard himself remains around like a very bad smell, sneaking around like a rat then he opens himself up for comment and ridicule.

So people Howard has declared himself open for hunting. He did try to sneak around in the dark like a rat as his norm, but he has been found out.
