The WSJ and Singapore

As many on here know, I often post about matters in Singapore. So have a look at this article published in the online version of the WSJ and not in the Asian printed edition. The paper last week lost contempt of court case. Here is some of what they have to say:

Let us begin with an apology to our readers in Asia. Unless they are online, they will not see this editorial. For legal reasons, we are refraining from publishing it in The Wall Street Journal Asia, which circulates in Singapore.

Economy XX

As we reach our twentieth thread on the economy, it seems that the good money (?) is on the RBA reducing the interest rates by 1%. Now what was it that Howard kept saying about interest rates?

In a local paper here I read an interesting comment on the fact that the GFC seems not to be affecting the average person as much as the rich. It is because they (the rich) have lost so much on-paper money which is affecting them, whereas the most of us do not have that much in investments – all of our money is debt.

Is that why Malcolm is so upset with the governments bank guarantee? Because it is not helping his asset base?

Remarkably, though, most people who have strong opinions on the topic hold no formal scientific qualifications to inform those opinions. Like it or not, this issue has become more political than scientific, and the two sides of the debate line up roughly along the left-right political divide. To make matters worse, partisans – from both sides – tend to take on board only those arguments which support their own chosen position.

World AIDS Day

Today is World AIDS Day. Instead of have a thread that is full of negativity – I thought I’d try and point out the good things that have occurred in the fight against AIDS.

I suppose that the best recent event is the replacement on Thabo Mbeki as the South African president, which means that the link between HIV and AIDS will no longer be denied. This will undoubtedly lead to lives being saved.

I downloaded and read the 2008 report on the Global AIDS epidemic by the UNAIDS group, and here are some of the positives that I gleaned: (more…)
